How to make Nattu Kozhi Rasam

Ingredients

For Chicken Broth

  • 1/2 kg Nattu kozhi Chicken
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1-litre water

For Tempering

  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 springs curry leaves
  • 1 medium sized onion, chopped
  • 1 medium sized tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 cup tamarind juice
  • 1 tsp salt

For Rasam Powder

  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds ( sombu )
  • 5 dried red chillies

Method of preparation

  • Roast all the ingredients listed under rasam powder in a tsp of oil until slightly brown and fragrant. Grind the mixture to a very fine powder. And keep it aside.

  • Boil the chicken bones with turmeric, salt and water for 3 to 4 whistles in a pressure cooker. Switch off the flame and wait for the pressure release.

  • Heat oil in a pan and add in the cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  • Now add chopped onions and fry for a couple of minutes, then add chopped tomatoes and the salt. Saute till the tomatoes are cooked.
  • Add 1/2 cup tamarind juice.

  • Add the chicken stock and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Add in the ground rasam powder and saute for another couple of minutes.


  • Switch off the flame and garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot.
