Toor dal is also an excellent source of carbohydrates, which your body needs for energy.Legumes such as toor dal contain complex carbohydrates, which are recommended because of their increased
nutritional value.
- 2 tsp Fried Gram / Pottu kadalai
- 1 Big tomato
- 1 tbsp grated Coconut
- 2 tsp Sambar powder
- 1/4 tsp Asafoetida
For the Sambar
- 3/4 cup Toor Dal
- 1 cup veggies
- Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
- Coriander leaves handful
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp Tamarind paste
For Tempering
- 1/4 tsp Mustard seed
- 1/4 tsp Urad dal
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
- 3 Dry Red Chillis Round variety
- Curry leaves handful
- 5 Shallots / Sambar Onions
- 1 Tomato
- 2 Green Chilli
Method of preparation
- pressure cook the toor dal by adding enough water , turmeric powder, asafeotida
- soak the tamarind, extract the pulp, keep it aside.
- Chop the vegetables and keep it aside.
- Paste roasted gram, 1 Tomato, coconut, sambar powder, asafoetida to a smooth consistency by adding water.
- Once the dal is cooked well, add the ground paste to the cooked dal.
- add 2 cups of water, vegetables and cook well
- Next, add the tamarind extract and cook until the vegetables are cooked. Then remove from heat.
- In a pan heat oil, add mustard seed, cumin seed, urad dal stir until the mustard splatter.
- Add curry leaves and chopped tomatoes
- Now pour this over the sambar,
- Garnish with coriander leaves
Tasty restaurant style sambar is ready now . Note that don't over cook the sambar. If you do so then sambar gets thicken . I have attached recipe of home made sambar powder.
